Building Permits

Building permits ensure that all buildings comply with safety, health, building and zoning requirements of the District of Kent and the Province of British Columbia.

You must have a building permit prior to:

  • New construction
  • Alterations
  • Reconstruction
  • Demolition
  • Removal, relocation or change of occupancy of any building (or structure) including excavation or other work related to construction.

As of January 1, 2024, asbestos abatement contractors must be licensed to operate in British Columbia, and anyone performing asbestos abatement work must complete mandatory safety training and obtain certificates.

Revitalization Tax Exemption Program

We offer a tax exemption program for owners of commercial or industrial property wanting to expand, upgrade or renovate their premises.

Business Licence Requirements for Contractors and Sub-Contractors

No inspections will be performed on a project where a contractor or sub-contractor is working without a valid business licence.

All sub-contractors working on a project must be identified on the Sub-Contractor Business Licence Form.

Building Reports provide information on the number, type and value of current development in the District. Please contact the Development Services department for recent reports.
