March 23, 2026 - Council Highlights

From the meeting held on March 23, 2026

Council's Report

Councillor Schwichtenberg noted that during the atmospheric rain event this last weekend, residents shared with her how effectively the new Chaplin Road culvert and Chinook Salmon restoration site performed, functioning perfectly as intended.

Councillor Spaeti brought attention to a delay in 2026-2027 BC Transit expansion plans across the Province. The delay, resulting from the Provincial Government's budget, will impact the planned 2027 expansion of transit service between the District of Kent and the City of Mission. It is currently unknown if this delay will be limited to one year or extend further into future years.

Evergreen Park Playground Design and Installation

Council approved the Canadian Rec Solutions playground design submission for the supply and installation of new playground equipment at Evergreen Park. As part of the District of Kent's ongoing parks and playground maintenance program, Evergreen Park was identified as having outdated equipment and requiring upgrades to meet current safety standards and enhance overall play value. The renewed playground will also feature pour-in-place rubber surfacing to improve accessibility and safety.

Proposed 2026 – 2030 Financial Plan

Mayor and Council received the draft five-year financial plan including a 2026 property tax revenue increase of 5.65%. This increase includes the following:

General Contractual & Inflationary

3.75%

Police Contractual & Inflationary

0.80%

Lets'emot Regional Recreation and Aquatic Centre

1.8%

Non-Market Change Tax Revenue Growth

-0.70%

5.65%

It is important to note that a 1% tax increase raises approximately $94,400 in property tax revenue. The District of Kent also contracts RCMP police services through the Province of British Columbia, and therefore has limited financial flexibility in managing associated budgetary requirements.
