April 27, 2026 - Council Highlights

From the meeting held on April 27, 2026

Mayor’s Report

On April 22, 2026 Mayor Pranger attended the Fraser Health Public Board Meeting in Mission. As the Chair of the Fraser Valley Regional Hospital District (FVRHD) Board, she spoke on the bridge funding request received from Dr. Derrick Chan related to the Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) currently operating at Chilliwack General Hospital. It was noted that due to the limits within provincial legislation and the Hospital District Act, the FVRHD cannot fund this request, as FLS is an operational health service, that aides in preventing secondary fractures and addresses the gap in osteoporosis and fragility fracture care, versus an eligible capital or capital-related expense. As a result, it was requested that the Fraser Health Authority consider bridge funding of $210,120 for FLS to continue to operate from September 2026 to July 2027. In response to Mayor Pranger’s request to support this initiative, Council voted unanimously in favour.

Council’s Report

Councillor Spaeti highlighted the recent St. Anthony of Padua Parish fundraising event which raised $3,500 for the Lets’emot Regional Recreation and Aquatic Centre (LRRAC), and over the course of the last four to five years the congregation has raised a total of $17,427.28 towards the LRRAC. Mayor and Council noted just how grateful they are to the organizers and volunteers who made this fundraiser possible, as well as the participants who attended.

Mayor Pranger, and Councillors Spaeti and Schwichtenberg, attended the Tulip Festival Night Garden at 5039 Lougheed Highway. The Onos Family first began the festival in 2006 on Seabird Island and is now in its 20th year! It is a beautiful addition to our area, and includes local food trucks and a farm shop selling local flowers as well as Circle Farm Tour business products. Those interested in attending the festival should plan their visit soon, as the last day is fast approaching on May 3. Check out all the details on their website.

Lower Fee for Smaller Events in the Agricultural Land Reserve

The Agricultural land Commission permits certain non-farm uses within the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), including Gatherings for an Event. These events provide an opportunity for farm properties to host small-scale community, cultural and private function while remaining compatible with agricultural use. The District’s role includes application review (compliance with provincial regulations and local considerations such as access and parking). Previously the District had one fee of $275 per event. Council approved an amended fee structure of a lower fee of $175 for evens with less than 25 attendees while keeping the $275 fee for events with 25 attendees or more.
