Agassiz Legion ‘Paints the Town Red’

Council received a delegation on behalf of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 32, highlighting the organization’s plans for celebrating the 75th anniversary of Canadian soldiers liberating Holland during World War II.

The Legion has been selling red liberator tulips to “paint the town red” in recognition of this milestone anniversary. Council noted that the District supports this endeavour and has purchased 300 tulips to be planted in this autumn in the Vimy Park cenotaph garden.

Along with other Legion branches across the Province, Branch 32 will also hold a Commemorative Candlelight Tribute on May 2, 2020 at 8:45 pm in Cenotaph Park.

Proclamations in the District of Kent

Mayor Pranger proclaimed the following in the District of Kent:

Rail Safety Week

September 23 to 29, 2019 is Rail Safety Week, to raise awareness about safety in and around railway property. Railway safety blitzes will be taking place in communities across the CP and Canadian Pacific Police Service rail network. Rail Safety Week continues to have a significant impact on community awareness, helping to reduce avoidable accidents, injuries and damage caused by collisions between trains and vehicles or pedestrians.

International Day of Older Persons

October 1, 2019 has been proclaimed as International Day of Older Persons. This year’s theme is the “Journey to Age Equality” and focuses on coping with existing and preventing future old age inequality by eliminating discrimination and empowering and promoting the social, economic and political inclusion of all. Observing the International Day of Older Persons promotes well-being of seniors and their families, advocates for policies that allow seniors to remain active, independent and fully engaged in the life of our Province.

Fair Employment Week

Fair Employment Week has been proclaimed for October 7 through 11, 2019 in support of contract faculty workers. Council noted the importance of the role that educators hold, including those in post-secondary environments, and the importance of ensuring fair working environments.

Waste Reduction Week

Council proclaimed October 21 – 27, 2019 as Waste Reduction Week in the District of Kent. This year’s theme, “Too Good to Waste” draws attention to the richness and diversity of the natural world and the importance of working towards ecological sustainability through waste avoidance and resource conservation.

The District has signed on to the Fraser Valley Regional District’s waste sorting bylaw effective April 1, 2020. This means that recyclable and compostable materials will need to be sorted out from garbage. Different bins will be needed for recycling, compost and household waste. Many resources are available to help, including www.bewastewise.com or direct your questions to the Recycling Council of BC at 1-800-732-9253 or hotline@rcbc.ca.

Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund
