Agassiz, British Columbia – The District of Kent is excited to announce that the resurfacing project for the Schep Park playground is now complete. The new accessible surface is made from tires recycled in British Columbia and will allow kids of all ages and abilities to enjoy the playground for years to come.
This project was made possible by the generous financial contribution from the Tire Stewardship BC (TSBC) Community Grant Program. The District thanks TSBC for their partnership on this project and also appreciates the community’s patience while the playground was closed for this significant upgrade.
“Tire Stewardship BC is pleased to support the resurfacing of the Schep Park playground. This playground is well used by the community and this new pour in place rubberized and extremely durable surfacing, made with recycled B.C. tires, makes the play area safer for all ages as the rubber is non-slip and it creates a soft surface to land on,” said Rosemary Sutton, Executive Director, Tire Stewardship BC.
“Our mandate is to get used scrap BC tires out of the landfill and repurpose them locally. TSBC awarded 10 grants across B.C. in 2023, to assist with financing the installation of the rubber surfacing for community spaces. As a result, 27,921 scrap tires will be used for rubber surfacing for B.C. playgrounds, walkways, parks and gathering spaces.”
“For me, the exciting part is that children of all abilities will be able to access this playground.”, said District of Kent Mayor Sylvia Pranger. “It’s fun to see how many families are at the park, despite the rainy fall weather. I see people enjoying the gazebo, the playground, and even the open grass field. It’s quickly becoming a destination park for the entire community.”
