Foster parents are: People like you from all walks of life, who provide skilled and caring service for children and their families. These services can range form emergency, short term to intensive therapeutic care.

BCFFPA (BC Federation of Foster Parent Association is another branch of the family tree.

Every Child Matters

On September 28th, Mayor and Council were joined with SD 78 Indigenous Education Coordinator Rod Peters, Chief Andrew Victor, Cheam First Nations and SD 78 Trustee Cathy Speth at Kent Elementary School to mark the occasion of Orange Shirt Day.

Mayor and Council at Orange Shirt Day

“The first Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 when residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad shared her story of how the orange shirt her grandmother gave her had been taken away on her first day of school.

Today, Orange Shirt Day provides the opportunity for us all to come together and stand with those generations who were affected by Residential Schools and acknowledge the loss of lives, culture, beliefs, languages and sense of pride.

Residential schools have left behind a legacy of intergenerational trauma that has continued to impact survivors, their children and their grand children.

Our Lets’mot Community shows us everyday how resilient Indigenous people are through the continuation of cultural traditions, practices and reclaiming their traditional ways of educating.

As a community, it is up to us, not only today but everyday to work towards solidarity as a society. In the spirit of reconciliation, we honour the loss to ensure that we to move forward to build mutually respectful relationships.  - Mayor, Sylvia Pranger

Active Transportation Planning

Council approved staff to apply for the BC’s active Transportation Planning Grant in the amount of $10,000 with an application deadline of October 30, 2020.

The District’s current Active Transportation Plan was developed in 2009. This plan has been used as a resource for the District’s 2015 Transportation Network Plan, as well as for its 2015 Park Acquisition, Improvement and Trail Development Program. Through these plans, the District has developed new multipurpose trails, such as the Mountain View Trail and Centennial Park Perimeter Trail, as well as the widening of Highway 9 between Agassiz and Harrison Hot Springs. The existing plan also serves as a guideline for developing future bike lanes, signage, sidewalks, road widening, primarily addressing infrastructure for bicycles and pedestrians.

Active transportation, as defined by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM), refers to all human-powered forms of commuting, including walking, running, cycling, scootering, skateboarding, in-line skating, using a wheelchair, etc.

If awarded, the total $10,000 Active Transportation Grant would be allocated towards the hiring of a consultant to work with District Council and staff to update the current Active Transportation Plan.

Scaled Down Remembrance Day

Due to COVID-19, this will be the first time, the Agassiz Legion will not be hosting a ceremony at the school or a parade to the Cenotaph. On what marks the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, spectators will be discouraged from attending in person due to physically distancing requirements.

A small group of Legion Member volunteers and other dignitaries will be placing wreaths at the Cenotaph and paying tribute to our Veterans.

The Legion will offer a Facebook Live presentation of the National Remembrance Day ceremony, and additional broadcast plans are under consideration.

“Be kind, be safe, continue to shop local”-Mayor Pranger
