Mayor’s Update
On May 23rd, Mayor Pranger attended the RCMP Mayor’s forum where issues such as the federal downloading of policing costs to municipalities were discussed. Specifically, it was noted that Highway Patrol Units will no longer respond to accidents and incidents on Highway 1, leaving only local detachments to respond.
Mayor Pranger also attended the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference in Toronto from May 24th – 26th. Some sessions she attended included, Building a National Climate Resilience Program, Equity and Inclusion, Housing Crises and Preparedness, as well as sessions with political leaders such as Prime Minster Trudeau, MP Melissa Lantsman and Elizabeth May. They also toured the Toronto waterfront revitalization project and marvelled at the amount of work and money that goes into such large-scale municipal projects.

Climate Change Crisis Delegation
Agassiz resident, Ms. Rosa Quintana, approached Council with a request for a bylaw that addresses unnecessary vehicle idling in our community. She spoke of her passion for the conservation of natural habitat (via the Fraser Valley Conservancy programs) and the environment, and cited personal examples of incidences where she witnessed unnecessary idling. She specifically requested a bylaw that would address idling in public parking areas and in front of commercial properties. Ms. Quintana believes that small steps, such as an idling bylaw, can make big changes towards reducing carbon emissions and encouraged Council to continue providing leadership on climate change by way of policy and concrete actions.
Councillor Watchorn said that, “when we know better, we start to do better”. He also expressed support for an idling bylaw around school zones and parks, but said that public awareness was the key to changing behaviours.
Mayor Pranger thanked Ms. Quintana for her presentation and highlighted the fact that she biked to Municipal Hall to make her presentation. Council will review Ms. Quintana’s suggestions and look for ways to reduce emissions overall.
