Council Highlights January 22, 2024

From the meeting held on January 22, 2024

Mayor’s Update

As part of its Fueling Futures program, Enbridge contributed $50,000 to the Lets’emot Regional Aquatic Centre. On January 10, Mayor Pranger and Councillor Spaeti were presented with a cheque by representatives of Enbridge at the facility’s future site.

To learn more about how you can donate to the Lets’emot Regional Aquatic Centre, visit: https://www.kentbc.ca/en/explore-and-play/Fill_the_Pool.aspx

Mayor Pranger recognized the Public Works crew for their hard work during the snow event last week and asked residents to clear drains near their properties to avoid flooding.

Proclamations

February 19 to 25 is declared as Heritage Week in the District of Kent. Heritage Week is an annual event that was established in 1973 by the National Trust of Canada. The goal is to encourage Canadians to learn about and advocate for the heritage in their communities. To get involved, visit a heritage site, museum or cultural centre, learn about local heritage conservation, or support heritage-preserving policies. To learn more about Heritage Week and how you can participate, visit https://heritagebc.ca/

If you would like to learn more about local heritage, please visit the Agassiz-Harrison Museum and Visitor Centre website for hours of operation: https://agassizharrisonmuseum.org/

“Purple Day” in support of Epilepsy Awareness Month is declared as March 26, 2024. The Municipal Hall will be lit purple to bring increased awareness about epilepsy, a disease that effects 1 in 100 people, old and young. To learn more about Purple Day and epilepsy, visit https://www.purpleday.org/

FoodCycler Pilot Program Expansion

Council previously approved a motion to offer a second phase of the FoodCycler Program. Similar to the first phase of the pilot program, there will be two units available. Registration of the program will begin in February, 2024 with the twelve-week pilot period starting prior to spring break. The program aligns with the ongoing efforts of the District as a member of the Fraser Valley Regional District’s Solid Waste Management Plan, giving residents who do not have curbside green waste pick up, or backyard composting.

The first phase of the FoodCycler program showed that District residents diverted 15.8 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions per year (equivalent to removing 3.5 gas powered vehicles off the road annually) and 12.1 metric tonnes of food waste per year (saving 9.8 garbage bags per household annually from the landfill).

For more information about the FoodCycler, visit https://foodcycler.com/. If you have any questions, please contact the Director of Corporate Services, Clair Lee at compost@kentbc.ca.

District of Kent Dike Etiquette Reminder

Mayor and Council thanked the committed group of volunteers who regularly inspect and clean the dikes designated for recreational purposes. Users who access the dikes are reminded to utilize dog waste bags and garbage cans located at the entrance and along the trails. Please respect neighbouring private residences and keep your dogs leashed.
