From the meeting of April 11, 2022
On March 30th, Mayor Pranger attended the Speaker Series hosted by the Agassiz Harrison Museum. Sarah Schreier presented on Sturgeon in the Fraser and beyond. I encourage everyone to attend these informative sessions. Please visit www.agassizharrisonmuseum.org for a complete list of speakers and dates.
I was privileged to participate in the 100th Anniversary Chilliwack Ploughing Match on April 2nd. It was an amazing turnout and a lot of fun.
Mayor and Council were hosted by the Board of the Agassiz Harrison Historical Society on April 4th for a High Tea and educational tour. Thank you to the many volunteers for their dedication and hard work.
On April 8th I participated in a virtual meeting with Minister Beare to share information about the Provincial/Federal $830 million funding to bring high-speed internet to all rural and remote communities. A follow-up letter is coming outlining how we can benefit from this program and how each service provider could improve services in our community.
It is my pleasure to announce that the District of Kent has been awarded $10 million for an Indoor Aquatic Centre. I couldn’t be happier to echo this announcement from the Federal and Provincial governments this morning. I want to thank the staff and Council for their work towards making this happen. Each of our senior staff members has been active on this as well as Council and previous Council. This has been a project in the making for several years and I couldn’t be more thrilled to share this with the community.
Thank you to the Governments of British Columbia and Canada for making this possible, and special appreciation to our MLA Kelli Paddon for all her hard work.
Read the Government of Canada’s News Release on the investments of 57 infrastructure projects across the province to create inclusive, resilient communities.
In their reports, Councillor Post, Councillor Schwichtenberg along with Councillors Spaeti and Watchorn, highlighted the extraordinary work of the Agassiz Harrison Museum staff and volunteers. The calibre of the volunteers is phenomenal as well as the work they do to archive and preserve our past, thank you.
The Museum will be hosting an Easter Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, April 16th. Pre-register to hold a time slot by dropping in at the museum (7011 Pioneer Avenue) or by calling 604-796-3545.
Councillor Watchorn attended the Annual General Meeting of the Agassiz Fire Department and brought greetings on behalf of the Mayor and Council and expressed his deep appreciation for their professionalism and commitment.
He reported that one of the reasons why they became firefighters is to create relations and build community in the District. They raise funds, make donations, and most recently assisted with funds for the installation of a residential lift for a community member. Thank you for the work that you do.
Mayor Pranger declared June 8, 2022, as “World Ocean’s Day” as requested by Nature Canada’s ocean protection team.
