Summer Student Employment Opportunities |
The District of Kent is currently accepting applications for the following student positions. These positions are open to students who are currently enrolled in school and returning to school in the Fall. Each position may be required for up to a sixteen (16) week period between the months of May to August, 2022.
Recreation Program Assistant - Competition # 2022-04 Preference will be given to students enrolled in a post-secondary recreation, physical education or education programs; however, other programs may be considered with experience working with children (3-12 years). A valid driver's licence is required.
Parks/Labourer - Competition #2022-05
Development Services – Competition # 2022-06 Preference will be given to students enrolled in post-secondary planning or geography programs.
Engineering Services – Competition # 2022-08 Preference will be given to students enrolled in a post-secondary engineering program; however, other programs may be considered. A valid driver’s licence is required.
Utilities / Public Works – Competition # 2022-09 Preference will be given to students enrolled in a post-secondary engineering, utilities or public works programs; however, other programs may be considered. A valid driver’s licence is required.
Pay and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Agreement, CUPE Local 458. The wage rate for these positions is $18.27 per hour plus 13.4% in lieu of benefits.

Junior Lifeguard |
Competition #2022-12
We have an exciting opportunity for positive and energetic individuals to fill the Junior Lifeguard Time Durated positions at the outdoor Ferny Coombe Pool. This is a recently created position within the Community Services Department. The Junior Lifeguard position is intended to offer an opportunity for new and aspiring Lifeguards to gain experience that would help them progress to Lifeguard/Instructor I and II positions as their skills develop. It is anticipated that these positions will commence immediately and end on September 5, 2022 (or September 18, 2022 if pool season is extended). The primary role of the Junior Lifeguard would be to complement the existing Aquatic Team and help to ensure public safety during busy public swim times and special events. Junior Lifeguards would work on deck, alongside Lifeguard/Instructor's I or II's with the opportunity to obtain valuable lifeguarding work experience and skills. Under the supervision of the Recreation Programmer or designate, and with the guidance of the Lifeguard Instructor II's, the Junior Lifeguards will be responsible for ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all patrons utilizing the Ferny Coombe Pool. We are looking for individuals who possess current National Lifeguard Service (pool option) certification, Standard First Aid (or equivalent), and CPR Level C. The wage rate for this time durated bargaining unit position is $17.54 per hour plus 13.4% in lieu of benefits. Upon successful completion of the required probationary period the wage will increase to $20.64 per hour plus 13.4% in lieu of benefits. Lifeguard/Instructor I |
Competition#2022-02 Up to 6 Time Durated Positions
We have an exciting opportunity for positive and energetic individuals to fill the Lifeguard / Instructor I Time Durated positions at the outdoor Ferny Coombe Pool. It is anticipated that these positions will commence on April 18, 2022 and end on September 5, 2022 (or September 18, 2022 if the pool season is extended). Working within the Community Services Department, the successful candidates will assist the Lifeguard / Instructor II to ensure a safe and fun aquatic environment. Duties will include performing lifeguarding duties, ensuring the safety of patrons utilizing the aquatic facility and supervising the use of the swimming and related recreation areas, supporting the Lifeguard / Instructor II in emergency situations, performing first aid as required and completing incident forms, performing maintenance tasks as directed, and conducting instructional and recreational aquatic programs. We are looking for individuals who possess current National Lifeguard Service (pool option), Water Safety Instructor and First Aid / CPR Level C. Additional certifications such as High Five and FOODSAFE are an asset. The wage rate for this time durated bargaining unit position is $19.72 per hour plus 13.4% in lieu of benefits. Upon successful completion of the required probationary period the wage will increase to $23.21 per hour plus 13.4% in lieu of benefits. Lifeguard/Instructor II |

We have an exciting opportunity for positive and energetic individuals to fill the Lifeguard / Instructor II Time Durated positions at the outdoor Ferny Coombe Pool. It is anticipated these positions will commence on April 18, 2022 and end on September 5, 2022 (or September 18, 2022 if the pool season is extended). Working within the Community Services Department, the successful candidates are responsible for leading the on deck supervision of the aquatic area or designated aquatics program, providing support and direction to staff; taking the lead on responding to incidents, corresponding with patrons, providing feedback to the Lifeguard / Instructor I; leading pool events and activities; daily pool maintenance and reporting. We are looking for individuals who possess current National Lifeguard Service (pool option), Water Safety Instructor and First Aid / CPR Level C, and Pool Operator Level I. Lifesaving Society Instructor Certificate preferred. Additional certifications such as High Five and FOODSAFE are an asset. The wage rate for this time durated bargaining unit position is $21.91 per hour plus 13.4% in lieu of benefits. Upon successful completion of the required probationary period the wage will increase to $25.78 per hour plus 13.4% in lieu of benefits. Recreation Instructor |
Reporting directly to the Recreation Programmer, the Recreation Instructor performs a variety of functions related to the delivery of recreational programs and special events. Typical tasks in this role include setting up and take down of venues for special events, including bouncy castle and all other necessary equipment and supplies for hosting children’s birthday parties, facilitating play time in the gym and monitoring recreation programs. We are looking for an individual that enjoys and has experience in supervising, instructing or leading preschool and school age children, and thrives in a customer service based environment. The hours of this part-time position will vary depending on programming and special event needs. Fitness Instructor |

Hours of work are based on seasonal classes programmed in the fitness schedule and possible new fitness class offerings.
